Being a yogi means orienting your whole life towards your highest potential, from the deepest realization of who you truly are to the unbounded expression of that truth in the world. Being a Yoga teacher is a commitment to awaken others to the insights of Yoga, a great gift to the world to be undertaken with honour, humility and a sense of humour.

This is an apprenticeship course which means we will work closely together, privately or with one or two others, molding your training according to where you are in your understanding and practice. My intention is to properly train serious yoga students to become strong, confident, knowledgeable teachers. In addition to all the relevant information about Yoga philosophy and theory I will put a strong emphasis on developing your personal practice and cultivating your personal growth. What you have to share as a teacher comes from your own experience. The deeper your realization of Yoga, the more naturally your teaching will flow.

In this 200 hour Apprenticeship course you will learn… continue reading

Ashtanga is taught in Mysore, India, its place of origin, in a self-practice format with each practitioner moving through the series at his or her own pace according to his or her own level of ability under the guidance of the teacher. It is the ideal way to learn for committed students whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced practitioner.

In my Self Practice classes, after the student becomes familiar with the beginning standing sequences, the main method of instruction is by giving hands-on adjustments to help move deeper into postures, correct alignment and to invite the student feel and enjoy the postures more fully.

The room is hot. You will sweat. The atmosphere is focused with the students’ attention entrained on their breath and in their bodies. Although the level of intensity will vary for each person on any given day, there is a desired state that one is attempting to align with with each practice session. That state is a harmonious balance between being relaxed in one’s inner being, allowing the body and mind to be however they are in the moment, and at the same time practicing at the edge, the potential of what is possible in that moment.

I teach Mysore Style Self-Practice classes at The Life Centre in Notting Hill and at Triyoga in Primrose Hill. See Classes for more information.

The system of yoga that I teach is called Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, distinguished from Patanjali’s Ashtanga yoga, the eightfold path of meditation. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga has been developed as a system of movement, postures and a certain breathing technique to progressively purify and tone the body and quiet the mind.

The Ashtanga Vinyasa system is intelligently sequenced so that each posture prepares the practitioner for the next. One must master each posture and sequence to a certain degree before moving on to the next. The series gets progressively more demanding, challenging the body to increasing levels of strength, flexibility, agility and balance as well as challenging the mind to increasing levels of concentration and relaxation.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a set series of postures linked together with a specific breathing technique. This combination of postures, movement and breathing creates a meditative flow that strengthens and tones the body, relaxes the mind and provides a strong foundation for deeper spiritual inquiry.

I consider Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga a profound moving meditation and I teach it as such. It is a practice that anyone can do no matter how old. It only requires a willingness to learn.

“It is encouraging to see so many Westerners turning to yoga,” Feuerstein is quoted in Yoga Journal. “I see ‘fitness yoga’ as an opportunity for discovering yoga’s deeper side: mind training leading to inner freedom and happiness. Yoga teachers have an obligation to be grounded in yoga’s understanding of the human mind, its profound philosophical and moral teachings, and its many practices. Only then can the Western yoga movement make a lasting contribution to modern humanity.”

I teach led Ashtanga classes as well as Mysore Style Self-Practice classes at The Life Centre in Notting Hill and at Triyoga in Primrose Hill. See Classes for more information.

Traditionally Ashtanga is taught in a self-practice format with each practitioner moving through the series at his or her own pace according to his or her own level of ability under the guidance of the teacher.

Many yoga schools offer led Ashtanga classes for all levels of practitioners, beginners to advanced students. You may find that class levels differ from one school to another. This is a guide for people who attend my classes.

Beginners Course

In this introduction to the Ashtanga system you will be guided through the fundamental elements and poses of Ashtanga Yoga creating a strong foundation for your practice, and leaving you feeling confident to join any level 1 classes.

Level 1

An introductory class for those new to Ashtanga or regular practitioners up for a light half primary series.

Level 1 – 2

A challenging introduction for those new to Ashtanga or regular practitioners who enjoy a strong half primary series practice.

Level 2

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Primary series. This class focuses on the building blocks of the practice, flow, correct breathing count, core strength: challenging for beginners and intermediates alike. For practitioners who have had some previous experience with Ashtanga yoga.

Level 2 – 3

A strong pace through primary series; there are often tasters from Intermediate or Advanced series thrown in for flavouring. Not for beginners.

Level 3

A challenging class for more experienced practitioners that assumes a good grounding in the principles of asana and breathing. For Ashtanga practitioners knowledge of the foundations of the style and the Primary Series is essential. Please be aware that this is a tough class.
